Honor students at the High School for Medical Science in the Bronx NY, will participate in an online premed program designed to help increase their chance of being successful in college, and fulfilling their dreams of becoming doctors one day.
The premed program is offered by Studentsofmedicine.com, a non-profit organization, and the founder Dr. Jimenez, says the course was designed to help give these kids the kind of advice that got him into an Ivy League medical school years back. Ms. Conception, a counselor at the High School for Medical Science said, “the students of medicine online course has been an excellent experience for our students!”
Dr. Jimenez was inspired to design this premed program to help eliminate health disparities that currently exist in our country. Many recent news reports indicate that racial and ethnic minorities receive lower quality healthcare than whites. “Increasing racial and ethnic diversity among health professionals is important because evidence indicates that diversity is associated with improved access to care for racial and ethnic minority patients, greater patient choice and satisfaction, and better educational experiences for health professions students, among many other benefits” (National Academy of Sciences, 2003, p.1).
The studentsofmedicine.com program is unique because it focuses on the time where most racial and ethnically diverse students are derailed in their premedical career. By preparing them in their junior and senior year of high school, we not only make them stronger applicants for college, we increase their chances of sticking with a rigorous premedical college track, and their chances of ultimately getting into medical school one day. In addition to the premed program, studentsofmedicine.com offers many additional resources for students who dream of becoming doctors, or other types of health professional careers. |
